Presentations

The last tuesday we had 6 presentations and it was interesting to see all of them:
  • Susana's presentation was about bullying it wasn't bad but unfortunately it wasn't nothing new either, the only criticism I can make is that sometimes you can't understand what she says:because the tone of her voice is not good enough, she doesn't give a clear explanation about she means, but those things, maybe, with a little bit more of practice can fix them.
  • Seba Marfil talked about a really interesting topic: CONACE aid campaign, which is the topic these last couple of days,it was attractive to see how people in general, most of them adolescents, react to this campaign and I agree with my classmates opinions : the goverment should give information to the students and let them know what are the effects of drugs in general, students need to be more educated about this topic.
  • Seba Contreras talked about Second Language Adquisition it was a good presentation and I like the fact that he gave us a essay written by him when he was in NY City.
  • Myriam Figueroa did a presentation about the Drinking Age it was an interesting topic but she did her presentation so fast that I wasn't able to see in details the most important facts.
  • Roberto Meneses talked about Becas Chile Sistema Bicentenario, it was interesting because it's an opportunity that we can have eventually.
  • And last but not least my presentation was about Cutting, why young people cut themselves, where they cut, what are the reasons and what can we do if we have a friend or in the future a student who have this problem,I was really nervious, but I think I did a good job.

Scout Movement by Gustavo Rojas

Gustavo talked about the Scout Movement and I have to say that it was very interesting because actually I did't know anything but there were a group of people who sing and dance and I know that it's even disrespectful to say but it's what I knew. Now it's totally different, becasuse I learnt that they are a great, entertaining, funny and a non-formal educational group of poeple who are close to nature and do a lot of activities that allows them to be in a good atmosphere among themselves, which is something that nowaday is not very common but an important thing to do,they train good people to the society.
It was a good presentation but it was the first so he was nervious but he did his presentation in a good way.

Educacion 2020

This is another way for us to know that there's something that is not working as it should be, Educacion 2020 says that by the year 2020 the 20% of the poorest schools will have the same quality of education that 20% of the richest schools which it's something that can be a dream for a lot of people but there's nothing wrong if you wanna give it a try and probably it's a mistake even to think about that but up until now there are 25.452 people who support this "proyect" ,so something good should have this crazy proyect if it has thousands of people thinking like Mario Waisbluth, who is one of the creators of Educacion 2020. People who are against this proyect maybe should reconsider their opinions about it or...maybe we are the crazy ones for actually believe that things in education can change.

5 Facts About Goal Setting

These practical tips on goal setting can help make it easier to set and reach goals:
1. Specific, realistic goals work best. The people who succeed are those who set realistic, specific goals. "I'm going to recycle all my plastic bottles, soda cans, and magazines" is a much more doable goal than "I'm going to do more for the environment." And that makes it easier to stick with.
2. It takes time for a change to become an established habit. It will probably take a couple of months before any changes, that's because your brain needs time to get used to the idea that this new thing you're doing is part of your regular routine.
3. Repeating a goal makes it stick. Say your goal out loud each morning to remind yourself of what you want and what you're working for. (Writing it down works too.) Every time you remind yourself of your goal, you're training your brain to make it happen.
4. Pleasing other people doesn't work. The key to making any change is to find the desire within yourself — you have to do it because you want it, not because a girlfriend, boyfriend, parent, or someone else wants you to. It will be harder to stay on track and motivated if you're doing something out of obligation to another person.
5. Roadblocks don't mean failure. It may take a few tries to reach a goal. But that's OK,it's normal to mess up or give up a few times when trying to make a change. So remember that everyone slips up and don't beat yourself up about it. Just remind yourself to get back on track.

Harassment at school

What Is Bullying?
"Bullying" can include lots of behavior, including: Sexual harassment of another student,Teasing and excluding,Calling names,Physically pushing or otherwise attacking,Threatening or hazing,Damaging or stealing belongings,Demanding money.
What Can You Do As A Parent?
If your child is being sexually harassed or bullied by another student, it's best to take action right away rather than waiting for the students to work it out themselves.
It's very important to know this information not just because we can cause bullying among others but because we,as future teachers, should know how to manage this kind of situations.

friendfeed

Another good and different way to share things with your friends is this one friendfeed.com and just like the other ones you can check out what your friends are doing and be able to add more and more friends to the list. This is another perfect example of the need of people of share their things,to meet people,to make friends,to interact with others in this kind of alternative way of doing it,not face to face or one on one but it's the perfect way to have an immediate answer of the other person.I like this web but I don't know if it's because I haven't gone depeer or what, but there's nothing that interesting or different that makes me feel excited about it.

keirsey.com

According to the test that I took I turned out to be Guardians which are people who are the cornerstone of society, for they are the temperament given to serving and preserving our most important social institutions. Guardians have natural talent in managing goods and services--from supervision to maintenance and supply -- and they use all their skills to keep things running smoothly in their families, communities, schools, churches, hospitals, and businesses, but this is just part of the definition of being Guardians and I agree with that but not all of it,if there are patters to follow or personalities descriptions, everyone should have some of that, that's why we are different to each other and that's the reason why there's a difference between all of us. Everyone have the "it" thing or element that makes us unique, good or bad, black or white it doesn't really matter, the thing is that we can live, talk, share, understand and love each other, that's the beautiful thing of life...

Curfew for teenagers

Sleep is important for learning as well as for growing. That’s why teen curfew (regular bed-time) is so important and we need to focus on that because nowadays it doesn't seem a relevant issue. It is important to our chidren to have fun, laugh, hang out with friends,be aware of what's going on around them but it's also important too, that they need to know that,as adolescents, they have to respect some rules and why not,to take advantage of that,if it's possible for them to see one. It's not a punishment to have some time,be and share with their family, relax and to take a time off and maybe that's it's something we sould be able to teach them, be at home it doesn't necessarily mean that children will be boring but if we show them how this time, which can be hell to them, can be a quality time for all of us.

"the dumbest possible thing that works"

There are no words for this page but fun,you don't use this page to look for information you just have to use it to "have fun",to try to use a piece of information in an original, colourful, and totally different way as we are used to,in fact I created one,but unfortunately, without actually knowing that I was creating one so it turned out to be anonymous and untitle, but anyway it was really fun.(This picture it's just an example of that)

General Educational Law

In this class Mr. Litman show us a ppt about how to make a good presentation and which are the steps to follow like the greeting of course, the topic: what are we gonna talk about, the plan:to tell in how many parts the presentation is divided, what are we gonna do during the presentation, etc and finally the aim which basically is what we expect from our classmates to know at the end of this presentation. After that Valentina,Angela,Catalina and Renato made a presentation about The General Educacional Law.They talked about what this law is about, the advantages and desadvantages and what we thought about it which it's something important to know not just because we are future teachers but because we're part of this kind of change in the society in which students demand nothing more than educaction for each and everyone with the same standards for everyone.

learning to learn

In the class we talked about what we should have in mind this semester, which is be more responsables about our duty of this subject which it's not something that hard...be 100% concentrated in class and what is happening on it, write in our blogs and correct or check any mistake if there's any and participate in class, give our opinions or comments about presentations, say what my classmates can improve or to get better results, etc. that was in the firs part of the class. In the second part we went to the english computer laboratory to look for information about LEARNING TO LEARN process in this new web http://www.cuil.com/ which it turns to be a very interesting topic because it shows you how the process of teaching and the relationship between student-teacher and teacher-student it's completly different nowadays or at least there is something that we all should work on it, Ann McLanachan for example she says: Everything that the school does should be designed to inspire the children's learning. 'It's all right for teachers to take forward interests of their own but the priority is the learning of the youngsters. Of course, the teachers also want job satisfaction. If we can get the two together, we've cracked it.' and that's,I think,it's something we should be interested in,of course it's important to have good results as a teacher and as a student but if we can have this kind of satisfaction together as a team it would be even better!

The morning after pill

This presentation was made by Carla and Claudia

They talk about the morning after pill and it was a very interesting topic, they show us the effect, the pros and against, and they give us a debate question for us to talk about it,the only problem with the question was that it wasn't clear....the topic was the morning after pill, the debate question was When we think life begin?,then a classmate gave her opinion saying that she was against the pill but if the situacion is:abuse or the girl is raped or something like that she might think in taking the pill, which it's something that I agree 100 % even though I'm against the abortion, but the girls of the presentation put God in the middle of that,and....ok we're talking about the life of a person who was raped so I think it's not fair to put your beliefs in the middle of that....but anyway....it was a good presentation, but it wasn't a good preparation for a debate, because we started to talk about something and we end up talking about something else,so my advice for the girls if I can give them one is that they should prepare a little bit more if they wanna make a good debate among the students.

Student's Strike

Once again it's possible to see the students on strike but this time it's about the LGE. Students are challenging the foundations on which much of the school curriculum is based, and they want to change a lot of thing according to educational system, and that's fine for me, but I think that the way they use to even "try" to make that change it's WRONG very WRONG!!!! You're not gonna be punished if you do something right,it's impossible to take you seriously if you keep doing stupid things like student did and still doing, that's the way I see the strike thing. I truly believe in what we called "the power of the word" ,communication, without that, you just can't do absolutely anything, that's the way I think this can be different for all of us,because it's not fair either not be able to go out of your house just because the student don't let you to do anything without feeling scared because something can happen, and it's not getting better nowadays, the situation actually it's getting worse and worse and it seems that, nobody wants to do something about it,lets change the future of our education, the education of our children and the education of our country, but in a good way, like it should be done.

Classroom Management

This presentation was made by Marlen and Clara

This was the last presentation and it was about classroom management,it was well prepared, clear and easy to understand. The girls talked about how it should be an effective discipline in the classroom, that it's important that teacher must be prepared for lessons, there must be a good organization:TEACHER,CLASSROOM AND LESSON ITSELF.

It was a good presentation with the appropiate information,it's necessary to have this in mind if we want to have a successful lesson for the students and of course for us.The girls seemed sure of what they presented and the only critic that I can give to Clara is that she need to improve the tone of her voice.

Troubled adolescents in school

This presentation was made by Carla and Claudia C.

This presentation in particular was good but too long, because even though it was a topic that I think everybody knows something or have an idea about it, in this case details were unnecessary.

The girls talked about the social problems like bulimia, drug abuse, alcohol that adolescents go through and how affects or just stoped the learning process, which it's an issue that we should have in mind and be aware of everyday, because it's something that can be in front of us and not be able to see it.

Teachers Personality

This presentation was made by Amira,Coni and Marce.

The first thing that the girl did was write in the board the definition of a list of words, that we didn't know the meaning like: slip up,tongue in the cheek, drawbacks, bamboozle, etc., they talk about what the personality teacher must have and gave the TOP 6 KEY TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL TEACHER:

  • sense of humor,

  • a positive attitude,

  • high expectations,

  • consistenly,

  • fairness and finally

  • flexibilty

Then the girls gave us a piece of paper in which we can find the different teacher's personality like:fair and balanced, more coach that teacher, ditto master, popular disciplinarian and the last walking carpet personality so the audience participate in the writting part. After that gave us situations in which we had to find out to which one personality belong.

The presentation was interesting to hear because if somebody asks about the characteristics of a good teacher, of course, everyone would say something like the 6 "THINGS " that a teacher should have in order to become a successful teacher and it's funny how a teacher or future one should be able to learn,to create or even to incorporate those characteristics if we want to be successful.

aboutgood too, just like the other ones, but Coni and Marce can improve the tone of their voice because it was too soft, but good,so it's just a detail than can be changed.

Resiliency

This presentation was made by Catalina and Leslie.

This presentation was interesting to hear because I didn't know what the topic was about, but obviously it's something that I do know now...By definition is the ability to adapt to different and hard situations and you are able to resolve this situations. It was a good opportunity to learn a little bit more about resiliency first because it's something that I didn't know like I wrote before and also because it's something that I should be able to have as a tool when I'll teach.

The presentation of the girls was good, because I think it's always a pleasure to hear someone sure about what he or she says like Catalina, which it's something that I think I don't have and I would love to,but I'm working about that, and Leslie nervious but sweet anyway,te only thing that both need to improve is the tone of thier voice.

About the picture...

Caring and support: Listen to students' concerns and answer their questions in direct, factual, age-appropriate ways. (Be careful of giving TOO MUCH information. especially with younger children.)

High expectations: Express your certainty that students can cope with the situation and faith in their strength and inner resources.

Opportunities for participation: Help students come up with ways they can address the crisis themselves: i.e.. raising money, sending cards and letters, forming a Peace Club.

Prosocial bonding: Provide students with positive activities to do together that give them a sense of purpose and mastery in the situation.

Clear, consistent boundaries:Strike a balance between addressing concerns and getting back to a normal schedule. Young people need the safety of familiar rules and routines.

Life skills: Encourage students to communicate their thoughts and feelings. (But balance is again the key: Don't let the talk escalate and overwhelm students).

Bullying

On May 5 this presentation was made by Roberto Meneses and Renato Troncoso

This presentation started by showing a video with 2 different situations of bullying in schools, the boys asked the opinion of the audience and then talk about the topic saying that Bullying is the act of intentionally causing harm to others, through verbal harassment, physical assault, or other more subtle methods of coercion such as manipulation as the definition and it can be something that it will happen even without notice.

At the end of this presentation the boys gave us a list of 12 questions whit yes/no answers in which we had to find out if we "practised" somehow bullying when we were in highschool,so if you answer yes was

  • 0=you are ok,

  • 1 or 2= possibly a bully in the making and finally more than

  • 2=you defenitly are a bully and should consider ways to change your behaviour

...and it turn out to be that I get 2 yes so you can imagine the rest...it's hard to hear that you can be potentially a bully person, but in my defense I can say that a question like do you like to tease or taunt other people? or do you get angry a lot and stay angry for a long time? , in the first question it's something that I do with my friends but just joking and in the second it depends on that gets me angry, but anyways I think, if it's a bad thing, you can change it easily.I like the fact that we were able to apply inmediately the topic to ourselves,so it was great! But it is something very important to be aware of not because it's something that happens regularly, because it's something that we're going to face it eventually.

LIFE VIDEO

This video called LIFE was presented by Mr.Litman

The video showed the idea of how the world evolves from the very beginning and how everything is complicated with this same evolution thing, how all the bad thing nowadays affects us like pollution, people in general are more stressful than ever, patience is something that almost not longer exist. I think it was like a wake up call, because even though everything it's different now from what it was before, people can just sit down and enjoy life with simple things like share a beautiful day with family.

School Leadership

This presentation was made by Valentina Acevedo and Angela Opazo

The girls started the presentation asking to the audience for those who are part of the school leadership: students, teachers, parents, principal, etc. Then they asked for the definition of education saying that education is the learning process that the student go through, another definition was that the education is a process that transmit knowledge and also gave the definition of leadership as the ability to lead and help people during the educational process, principal as who leads and work with teachers, parents, pupils, secretaries, library, rules, teaching and learning startegies, educative materials, etc, they said thay the main objective is to get and provide a successful education.

This presentation was very good, with good and specific information, the girls allowed the audience to participate during the presentation and give opinion about the topic,so I really enjoy it.

Effective schools

This presentation was made by Claudia Gonzalez and MarĂas Jose Medina

It was the first presentation of the class and I think it was very good, they started to present the topic by doing a little dialogue between them saying the difference between to their own experience in school, they asked questions to the audience about it,for example if we remembered a specific teacher o situation and things like that. Then started the presentation itself, talking about the 7 pionts of effective schools like: student academic process in measure, the enviornment in the class (saying that the teacher should be aware of that and also that it should be safe and orderly enviornment),home-school relations, just to name a few...Even though it was a short presentation it was clear and of course easy to understand and I pretty sure that the girls can do better than that and I'm not saying that because I think it was bad it just because I think it was the first...

Monday 7 April 2008

Peque

Well, I really don't know how to start doing this but I think that Im gonna have a lot of time to make it ok...
...my name is Tamara Farias but everyone called me peque, and I'm so into that, that when someone who I really really know, like a member of my family or friend called me TAMARA! I know that it's not good...anyway...I'm 21 and it's awesome, not because you're an "adult",which it's a big deal, but I don't know it's something special ,at least for me.
I consider myself like a great friend, a really good one,I'm honest,i'm not afraid to show my points of view even when it can be "the opposite" of everyone's toughts and I can keep writing a lot of good and bad things about me, but is not something that I'm comfortable about it, or maybe it can be another day...
